The 2023 Future of Healthcare in Greece Conference aims to focus on the new developments that are going to affect the healthcare sector over the next decade with the main goal to help us consider the policy choices for the intervening period. It also aims to highlight what the possible future might mean for the various interest groups involved, and which questions policymakers will respectively have to face. The next decade will see considerable transformation in how health systems are designed, propelled by opportunities such as digital health, growing consumerism, and mounting financial constraints. The Covid-19 pandemic has also necessitated and accelerated significant transformations.
Having recognised the links between health and wellbeing, social stability and economic performance, governments must restructure traditional ministerial departments to be better at handling the interconnectedness of factors which determine health. In addition, governments are now more demanding and strategic about the way they invest in health technology. They are explicit about the health problems they want to address and have actively engaged in shaping the innovative health tech market through new partnerships.
In Greece we strive for a fundamental economic and social transformation, affecting economic activity but also technologies, attitudes and institutions. Extensive health system reforms have been ongoing since 2010, including the strengthening and expansion of publicly provided primary care services and digital transformation. There has also been reinvigorated focus on prevention and tackling risk factors through a new national public health plan. Challenges remain in ensuring accessibility and affordability of care, increasing budget spending on health and strengthening medical and nursing staff. Now an ambitious systemic and legal paradigm shift is needed to allow access for all, which entails a radical reappraisal of current practices. and the needed escalation of transformation including transition from hospital-based systems to primary care, community, and social care–based systems.
To this end, decision-makers, experts, and community members from the public and private sector, civil society, and academia will come together to envision how we can build resilience to fight for solidarity, equity and transformation in health, within Greece and Europe and on the global stage – and provide a prescription for a healthier future.
